This typeface, designed by Max Miedinger and other project members at the Haas’sche Schriftgiesserei, has become one of the most famous and popular typefaces in the world, thanks to the marketing strategy of Stempel and Linotype. It forms an integral part of many printers and operating systems. The original letterforms of Helvetica had to be modified for the Linotype system. Over the years, Helvetica was expanded to include many different weights, but these were not coordinated with each other. Stempel AG redesigned and digitized the “Neue Helvetica” typeface for Linotype and made it a self-contained font family.

Today, this family consists of 51 different font weights. The original numbering system for the weight designations came from the numbering of the Univers font. The basic font weight, “Helvetica roman”, is at the heart of this numbering system. The designation “55 roman” forms the central point. The first figure of the number describes the stroke thickness: 25 ultra light to 95 extra black. The second figure gives information on the width and orientation of the font: Helvetica 53 extended to Helvetica 57 condensed. The Neue Helvetica sets new standards in terms of its form and number of variants.

EDIT: Woops spelled the title wrong! I'm leaving this first part in for your reference, see below as I've halfway solved my problem: ---------------------- Hey everyone, I have been working on an InDesign doc for a client and my fonts are acting up. I have Helvetica Neue installed (even deleted and re-installed once to try to fix). Helvetica Neue (Normal) shows up in Photoshop with no problems, exactly as expected, however in InDesign when I select Helvetica Neue (Normal) it gives me a very bold font. Same font and style but a totally different look. I've double- and triple-checked all of the other formatting and nothing else is set differently. ---------------------- ACTUALLY, sorry for the tangent but I think I just found my problem (wanted to leave the above so you could understand what I was seeing). I have multiple versions of 'Helvetica Neue (Regular)' installed that all have different styles, and it seems perhaps InDesign is using the last found version as that font when it loads up. What made me think of this is in Photoshop there are 5 versions of Helvetica Neue (Regular) and in InDesign there is only 1 version. Can any of you gurus fill me in on which of these is just the standard 'Helvetica Neue' font, if any?

I have: Helvetica Neue Thin (seems pretty thin to me) Helvetica Neue Light (closest match I seem to have) Helvetica 35 Thin (seems a bit too wide maybe?) Helvetica Neue Roman (seems a bit too bold) I don't seem to have just 'Helvetica Neue, Regular'. I'm so confused!

=) I can select 'Helvetica Neue, Regular' in Photoshop, but I don't seem to actually have a font named that in my fonts folder. They're all versions of oblique, heavy, condensed, etc. You probably also have PostScript T1 complete family installed I don't know if your message is a reply to mine, but I've only got four very old Type 1 Helvetica fonts (out of umpteen) and a few TrueTyoe fonts of the later Helvetica Neue family, which have the weight described by numbers, and have 'HelvticaNeue' as part of their names. It is possible that Apple name them differently, as Windows just displays the names as 'Helvetica' plus the weight number. (I've never even seen an Apple computer, apart from in shop windows.).
